Water supply for herders and fishermen through drilling a well

Water supply for herders and fishermen through drilling a well

Kapedor, Turkana, Kenya

Aim

To improve the quality of life in the area by increasing the possibility of local resources for sustainable development

The project took a few stages:

1. Drilling the well

Starting with a hydrogeological survey, we then applied for a drilling permit and finally got a geologist to inspect the area. Once this was completed, we found a drilling company to take care of the drilling itself.

2. Installing hand pump

Once the well had been created, we installed a hand pump to provide access to the water.

3. Building a drinking trough

We then constructed a drinking trough for small animals such as goats and sheep.

4. Creation of local water committee

Finally training was provided about maintenance and preservation of the well and about the related health and hygiene. This allows the local community to manage the well and hand pump on an ongoing basis.
