Volunteering

Donating time

New Ways welcomes the support of volunteers to help with our fundraising in the UK.

We rely on a broad base of energetic volunteers who share a common concern for the welfare and aspirations of people in some of the most deprived regions of Africa. Since its earliest days we have depended on the generous contribution of volunteers’ time and skills to help the charity stage fundraising events, help with the mailings and administration, make introductions to friends and family who are also willing to either support us in practical terms or through financial support by taking out a subscription. Even where we do need to engage the services of professionals, these funds too are met by generous donations from benefactors and are often provided at a much reduced cost.

Without our volunteers we would find it difficult to sustain our ability to meet the ever growing need for funds. If you would like to help us, please get in touch by emailing us at info@newways.org.uk, we’d love to hear from you.

Tony Earnshaw

Tony Earnshaw has been actively involved with New Ways since 2004 when he took part in the first Kenya Bike Ride, since when he has completed other bike rides (in Kenya and Normandy), staged fundraising performances of his plays and produced a poetry collection about the first bike ride. He currently edits our newsletter. Tony says “I first came across New Ways through the Advent Ball and started to get more involved when I was asked to write a poem for the 10th anniversary celebrations. Writing that poem made me ask questions about how New Ways operated and I was very taken by the partnership approach and the sustainable way in which everything was organized. When the first Kenya Bike Ride was organized I was persuaded to take part even though I had to buy a bike to train on. I was very glad I did it though – the opportunity to visit Turkana and meet the people brought home to me just how much of a partnership this is. For me, New Ways has many of the qualities we should look for in a charity – it’s open, direct, sustainable, supportive, and low cost. And effective.”

Bella Jamieson

Bella Jamieson is a Montessori nursery teacher who lives in Fulham and has three daughters. She became involved in New Ways when Fr Albert Salvans was assistant priest at St Thomas of Canterbury. Her first experience of helping New Ways was a run in Richmond Park. She went on from this to a bigger challenge – raising money through running the London Marathon, which she ran a total of three times for New Ways. She has also raised money through collection pots at various shops in Fulham for the Nutritional Nursery schools and selling Christmas cards in the parish.

Despite all the activities with which Bella is or has been involved, it is perhaps the way in which her compassion and commitment infects all her life which is most striking. As a nursery teacher she has taken the opportunity to use her New Ways knowledge and involvement to benefit the children in her care and raise their awareness.

In her words, ‘New Ways in the Nursery is about sharing a passion with the children, parents and staff, to raise an awareness of when we give of ourselves we truly give, money is always second.

Chief Executive Officer (Volunteer)

I first began working with the charity as a volunteer in London in 1995 and the years since then have flown past. With many years’ experience as an investment consultant in the corporate arena, I brought significant business experience and knowledge to New Ways. My first task was to help put together a business plan to develop the fundraising focus and efforts that would grow the charity in the UK. Then I supported the directors and volunteers by helping them to implement these plans. On a visit to Nairobi in 1996, I saw first-hand the implementation and impact of the first major project New Ways was supporting as a result of the success of the fundraising efforts of the team in UK. When I returned I decided to make a personal and permanent commitment to New Ways and the work it supports in Africa. I still really enjoy giving back as I get so much more from my work than I will ever give to the people we help empower. I remain sincerely and humbly grateful to all the people who have helped make New Ways what it is today and who have changed the lives of so many where we work in Africa.

I became involved with New Ways when I met Angela and Albert in 1995 – helping with the very first fund raising event. I have always been interested in ways that I could help some of the most deprived peoples of the world, and I’m a great believer in the education of children as a solution to fighting against ignorance and exploitation. I was attracted to working with New Ways as it maintains low running costs and yet is both pragmatic and efficient. I have visited Turkana many times organising teams of student volunteers to work with the local communities there. Today as a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank, I am based in Paris in my native France. I’m also a regional Christian Democrat MP in the Ile de France Parliament.

I first started volunteering with New Ways in 1994 and over the years have been involved in many fundraising events. I first visited New Ways projects in Kenya in 1996 and have returned several times over the years to see more of them in Kenya and Mozambique. I have found it inspiring to see that small scale, local development projects, deeply rooted in a community can have a long lasting impact and change lives for the better. The fact that New Ways has a long term commitment to the areas it supports means that we really see the benefits over time.

I’ve been involved in New Ways since day one! I knew the team in Turkana through friends in London, and as a musician I was often asked and delighted to support fundraising events from the get go. In 2006, as a successful freelancer in business, I was able to offer the charity a couple of days a week supporting the project fundraising activities through submissions to grant making trusts, events and marketing. In 2011 I was delighted to join the trustees as a non-exec director and visited the projects in Turkana that year which provided first-hand experience of the work in the field and importantly, the hardship and difficulties presented by such a challenging climate and the nomadic life style of the Turkana people.
