Water & infrastructure
We support practical initiatives that not only provide short-term tactical benefits ‘on the ground’, but that also contribute to our longer term strategic objectives. Primarily, these relate to the accessibility and sustainability of clean potable water, and to facilitating the development of physical infrastructure like community buildings, whilst providing training and associated work opportunities, supporting entrepreneurs and encouraging the empowerment of women through economic activity.
Water for life
Much of the work we support is based in areas where persistent droughts have resulted in food and fodder scarcity, famine, and heavy losses of livestock – the main source of livelihood. When water is scarce for prolonged periods the animal population is decimated and people suffer malnutrition and starvation, with the young, the elderly, and the infirm especially vulnerable. Water infrastructure is crucial, and we support projects that build dams, drill for water, establish bore holes, and enable the conservation of runoff, always working with local leaders to find the best solution in each case.

Infrastructure
Funding major infrastructure in South Sudan and Ethiopia has been our primary focus in recent years with two large projects in particular. Firstly, the funding of a Vocational Training Centre in South Sudan provided participants with life skills enabling them to build new careers. Secondly, we funded the next phase of the building of a development centre in a remote area of Ethiopia, working with both the Nyangatom tribe and South Sudan refugees. An Empowerment Programme in Turkana is helping women provide for their families and become less reliant on aid. Other small infrastructure programmes include the provision of solar lamps in Malawi at a significant discount, which enables the students to study in the evenings and families to spend more time together.
