Economic empowerment

Generating Economic Activity

A common theme across all our projects and areas of activity is the need to create opportunities for employment. This can be through one of a number of activities such as providing support in the form of fishing equipment, training to maintain equipment, micro loans, and creating bakeries. Our commitment to creating and encouraging employment stems from the fact that it creates wealth, increases security, and empowers community members, especially the women.

Agriculture

Our support is primarily focused on Furrows in the Desert (FID), a community-based long-term development programme introducing agriculture in northern Turkana as a means of food production. Working towards food security in the area, and as an income-generating activity through the marketing of produce, the development of sustainable agriculture can offer a complementary or alternative solution for those in the Turkana community that are in transition from an arduous way of life as pastoralists. In its first 10 years, over 900 farmers have graduated either from the Lobur Training Centre, or have received on-the-ground training. Today, both men and women from 50 different communities in Turkana and Marsabit in Kenya, and Nyangatom in Ethiopia are living as self-employed farmers. The families and  wider communities across the region benefit directly and indirectly from the produce of the FID farmers.

Fishing for food and livelihood

Much of the project work we support is focussed on Turkana where the Turkana and Dassenach communities have traditionally survived by relying on their livestock. As recurrent droughts and famine make this more difficult, other ways of survival are sought and one of these is to make use of the vast natural resource which is Lake Turkana. The lake does not provide drinkable water, but it is well-stocked with fish, and we work with the communities to provide boats, fishing gear, and training in the use and maintenance of these resources to provide long lasting and sustained livelihoods.
