Angela Docherty, Chief Executive of New Ways, has won a prestigious UK Charity Award 2006.

Angela was presented the award of Charity Principal of the Year in a glittering ceremony last night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, in the presence of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

The evening was compered by BBC presenter Jeremy Vine. Ed Milliband, MP and Minister for the Third Sector also attended the event which was sponsored by Charity Times magazine.

The prize is given to: 'an executive head of the organisation who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and management skill in the running of a charity.'

Founded in 1994, New Ways supports health, education, water and agricultural development projects in Africa and South America. Its focus is on helping communities become self-sufficient.

Angela Docherty said: "I am overjoyed and honoured to have been given this award. But really its an award for New Ways. Like all the winners on the night, I am one of a team of many, many volunteers who give up their time with family and friends to help New Ways with its development work in Kenya and Latin America.

From my perspective this award belongs to our colleagues working in the field year after year, alongside the communities we support, for their inspiration, passion and dedication - which drives me and the volunteers here in the UK and Ireland to do whatever we can to help them continue their great work."

New Ways Chief Executive Angela Docherty, has been nominated as Charity Principal of the Year for her work.

The prize is awarded to: "an executive head of the organisation who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and management skill in the running of a charity."

Founded in 1994, and run on an entirely voluntary basis (until this year) , New Ways supports health, education, water and agricultural development projects in Africa (predominantly Turkana) and South America.

Angela said: "Our focus is on projects that are sustainable and provide a basis for the long term development of a community or region, mostly in areas that are particularly remote or deprived.

Invitation to take part in a country cycle ride

Fancy a gentle cycle ride around country lanes with the opportunity to stop for tea and a pub lunch on the way?

New Ways, a charity which supports the work of the St Paul's Missionary Community in Kenya, is recruiting cyclists to take part in their annual Bike Ride on Saturday 16th September. The route is about 30 miles long, round Haslemere in Surrey.

The group will be meeting at Haslemere railway station at 10am for a 10.30 start. They plan to go at a fairly easy pace arriving back at the station around 4.30-5pm.

There is plenty of parking in the station car park and also trains from Waterloo (although with only a limited number of places for bikes).

If you¹d like to come contact New Ways for a sponsorship form on: info@newways.org.uk or call 020 7642 1817.

Organiser Angela Docherty says: "It¹s a great day out so please do come along and feel free to bring along friends and family."

She explained: "The aim of the sponsored cycle is to raise funds for the projects that New Ways has committed to fund in 2006 and to allow us the opportunity to take on further projects. In 2006/7 the main projects we are supporting develop the water infrastructure of the Turkana region of northern Kenya including the building of rock catchment dams and windpumps, as well as our ongoing commitment to support nutritional units that provide two meals a day, five days a week to around 1,800 children. We will also support a number of other projects in agriculture, education and community development in Mozambique, Bolivia and Mexico."

Plucky eight-year-old climbs three mountains for African charity

An eight-year-old girl climbed the three highest mountains in Britain recently, to raise funds for a charity in Kenya.

Phoebe Chubb, from Southsea in Hampshire, with her brother Oli, aged 10, were part of the 'magnificent seven' young explorers who took on the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, (4,406 feet); Scafell Pike in England, (3,208 feet); and Snowdon in Wales, (3,559 feet). Altogether they climbed 11,176 feet.

Five adults, including her Mum and her Dad (who recently completed the London marathon), accompanied the children.

Phoebe plans to give all the money she raises to New Ways - a charity which supports health, education, water and agricultural projects in the Turkana desert region of northern Kenya - run by the St Paul's Missionary Community.

"Some people are collecting money for the Cathedral, but I've decided to give to the African charity because I think they need it more," she said.

Phoebe says she liked Ben Nevis the best of the three mountains because, she said: "it was the sunniest and I didn't struggle."

Besides mountain climbing, Phoebe is keen on rock climbing and horseriding. She once had two pet spiders: Charlotte and Charlene and is learning the piano. Her next project? To climb the three mountains in one day.
